WASHINGTON, D.C.- On June 30, Congresswoman Nanette Barragán (CA-44) issued a statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan – which would have forgiven up to $20,000 in student loan debt for 43 million student loan borrowers.
“This morning the Supreme Court wrongly decided that millions of students will continue to carry prohibitive debt when they struck down President Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness program”, said Congresswoman Barragán. “This decision is devastating to the nearly 75,000 students in California’s 44th Congressional district, most of them students of color, first-gen students, and students from low-income and working-class families. For millions of Latino students this relief would have given them a door to the middle class – instead, the Court will keep these students from achieving their American Dream.
An affordable, high-quality education must be accessible so that students can better provide for themselves and their families and contribute to our vibrant workforce. This decision may be a setback, but I will continue the fight to ensure every student can attain an education without facing unjustifiable financial burdens.”
