WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 18, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a $5,193,648 unsheltered homelessness grant to the City of Long Beach Housing Authority to address homelessness among people in unsheltered settings.

“Homelessness is the biggest challenge facing Long Beach and California. This emergency is going to take consistent federal support,” said Congressman Garcia. “This funding will give the community additional critical resources to get people housed and is part of a major effort from the Biden Administration to address homelessness.”

These resources build upon the momentum at all levels of government to solve homelessness by providing housing with supportive services. They respond directly to the calls for more federal assistance to address unsheltered homelessness specifically. Additionally, they provide communities with the resources and tools to respond to homeless encampments humanely and effectively while avoiding approaches that criminalize homelessness. This announcement adds to a first set of grant awards announced in March bringing the total of HUD grants to our District to $17,642,888. A full list of grant awards can be found here.

.Congressman Garcia believes that housing is a human right, and we have a moral obligation to ensure every one of our residents has access to homes that are safe and affordable. He knows it’s critical for us to invest in not only shelter, but supportive services and permanent housing for people who are unhoused. Congressman Garcia also believes we must redouble efforts to assist residents who are housing insecure. This is a long-term, structural problem and it requires us to take bold steps to create the new homes our community needs—especially along our transit corridors and job centers.###
