WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 8, Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) hosted his inaugural Congressional Art Competition for high school students in the 42nd Congressional District. Each Spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors The Artistic Discovery Contest, a nationwide high school visual art competition, to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and every congressional district. From March 29th to April 21st of this year, the office accepted submissions for the 2023 Congressional Art Competition, which was open to all high school students who either reside or attend school in the 42nd District. Over 100 students participated in the competition and the top 18 pieces were displayed at the reception at the Long Beach Museum of Art.
“Through art, students can learn to communicate their thoughts and emotions in powerful and meaningful ways, fostering empathy and understanding for themselves and others,” said Congressman Garcia. “Our community has so many incredible students, and I was so impressed by the amazing artistic talent on display from all across our district. I can’t wait to showcase a talented young local artist in the halls of Congress.”

“Overloaded” by Grace Barrios will be featured in the Cannon Tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building and the US Capitol Building throughout 2023 as the winning piece for California's 42nd District's Congressional Art Competition. The artwork will be displayed for 11 months with artwork from all participating districts from around the country. The second and third-place winners will have their artwork displayed in prominent locations in our Washington D.C. and Long Beach offices.
