CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 70:O’Donnell Bill Will Allow Additional Instructional Minutes to Make Up for School Closures

School10

California State Assembly District 70 issued the following announcement on March 16.

Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D – Long Beach) announced he would forward legislation to give school districts, county offices of education and charter schools more flexibility to make up missed instructional days. This bill is in response to the school closures across the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will apply to current and future school years.

“This effort will give school districts, county offices of education and charter schools the flexibility they need to ensure students meet the minimum required instructional days during the school year,” said Assemblymember O’Donnell, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “AB 3120 ensures that academic progress will continue for California students.”

Following the Governor’s announcement that schools across the state should close, many students face the prospect of lost instructional time. Current law requires schools to meet both instructional minutes and instructional day requirements. AB 3120 will give schools the flexibility to meet instructional time requirements by using instructional minutes to make up missed instructional days. The bill will also include weather, wildfires, floods, infectious disease and myriad other reasons that require school closures for varying periods.
