California State Assembly District 70 issued the following announcement on Feb. 26.
Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D – Long Beach) introduced Assembly Bill 2162 to improve the indoor air quality in California classrooms. This bill is in response to studies that have shown improperly installed and maintained classroom ventilation systems can be harmful to students.
“Studies show higher carbon dioxide rates in the classroom can hinder our students’ ability to concentrate and succeed,” said Assemblymember O’Donnell, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “This bill will improve student health and student achievement by making sure those who install air conditioning units in classrooms follow strict safety guidelines.”
AB 2162 requires those that maintain and install heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems undergo proper certification and training to ensure fresh air is coming into classrooms. Last year, the University of California, Davis and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory released a study that showed that the air quality in classrooms are poor due to insufficient ventilation and faulty installation of HVAC systems.
The bill awaits referral to its first policy committee.
