U.S. Congresswoman Nanette D. Barragán, who has represented California’s 44th district since 2017, posted a series of messages on X addressing concerns about federal benefits and public health awareness in late October and early November 2025.
On October 31, Barragán warned CalFresh recipients about possible disruptions to their November benefits due to an impending government shutdown. She wrote, “CalFresh recipients — starting tomorrow, November 1st, your November benefits may be affected by the Republican shutdown. In a post dated November 1, she highlighted Spina Bifida Awareness Month and acknowledged those affected by the condition: “October is #SpinaBifidaAwarenessMonth, a time to recognize the hundreds of thousands of people living with Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is one of the most common birth defects that can cause permanent disability, and it can lead to physical, cognitive, and social challenges. We https://t.co/W4IbBrigeJ”.
Later that day, Barragán addressed federal court orders related to emergency funds for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), criticizing former President Donald Trump’s response amid the ongoing government shutdown. She stated on November 1: “A federal court has ordered Trump to use the emergency funds for SNAP. He refuses. The Trump/Republican shutdown puts over 30 THOUSAND #CA44 households and over 22 MILLION households across America at risk of skipping meals or going hungry. No American should have to worry about https://t.co/2gA9IQ8whO”.
Nanette Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and continues to reside there today. She earned her BA from UCLA in 2000 before completing her JD at the University of Southern California in 2005.
CalFresh is California’s implementation of SNAP—a program that provides food assistance to low-income residents—which faces uncertainty during periods when the federal government shuts down due to funding disputes between lawmakers.
