U.S. Congresswoman Nanette D. Barragán, who represents California’s 44th district, has recently addressed issues of immigration enforcement, Supreme Court decisions, and political violence in a series of social media posts.
On September 10, 2025, Barragán expressed concern about the impact of immigration enforcement on students. She stated: “Students should go to school to learn — but thousands are now forced to miss their classes so they don’t get picked up by ICE. Children deserve to get an education without fear of separation from their families or being taken by ICE because of the color of their skin or the” (September 10, 2025).
Later that day, Barragán voiced dissent regarding a recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. She wrote: “I DISSENT. We live in a country where 6 members of the highest court of the land decided it’s ok to profile immigrants based on the color of their skin or the language they speak. I DISSENT. The President of the United States thinks it’s ok to ignore the fundamental rights” (September 10, 2025).
In another post published on September 10, Barragán addressed political violence and its implications for democratic discourse: “Violence against one person for their views means we allow violence against anyone for their views. We cannot allow this. Political violence CANNOT be condoned, regardless of your party or beliefs.” (September 10, 2025).
Barragán has served in Congress since replacing Janice Hahn in 2017 and is known for her advocacy on issues affecting her constituents in Los Angeles County. Born in Los Angeles in 1976, she continues to reside there and holds degrees from UCLA and USC Law School.
