Nanette D. Barragán, a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 44th district since 2017, has been vocal on several pressing issues through her recent social media posts. Barragán, who resides in Los Angeles and holds degrees from UCLA and USC, has drawn attention to concerns ranging from emergency communication access to healthcare cuts and immigration enforcement.
On July 6, 2025, Barragán highlighted the inadequacy of emergency alerts available in multiple languages during hurricane season. She stated: “As we enter the heart of hurricane season — millions of Americans still can’t access emergency alerts in their own language. This is unacceptable & dangerous.” She mentioned leading a letter with Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sylvia Garcia urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to address this issue.
In a post dated July 7, 2025, Barragán criticized Republican efforts regarding healthcare legislation. She expressed concern over potential negative impacts stemming from proposed cuts: “THIS. Republicans tried to hide the devastating impacts of their cuts to health care in the Big Ugly Bill — but that doesn’t change the fact that cuts to Medicaid providers will close medical centers, short-staff hospitals, and severely increase wait times at your local ER.”
On July 9, 2025, Barragán addressed an incident involving law enforcement at MacArthur Park: “What we saw yesterday in MacArthur Park was outrageous — uniformed, militarized agents on horses and in armed vehicles invading a park where children were at play during their summer camp.” She connected this event to funding allocations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under what she referred to as “The Big Ugly Law.”
