Nanette D. Barragán, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district since 2017, issued a series of statements on September 26, 2025, highlighting concerns about an impending government shutdown and its potential impacts.
In her first post, Barragán warned about the immediate consequences if funding lapses: “4 days from now funding will run out and the government will be forced to shutdown. Just a few ways that could impact you: federal employees won’t get paid, federal agencies will be severely understaffed – if open at all, many food safety inspections will stop, and there will not” (September 26, 2025).
Later that day, she criticized Republican lawmakers for their stance on health care tax credits. Barragán wrote: “Republicans refuse to negotiate with @HouseDemocrats to extend the health care tax credits — risking the health and lives of millions of Americans. They would rather shut down the government than make health care affordable and accessible for the people. This is dangerous and” (September 26, 2025).
In a subsequent statement, Barragán addressed actions by the Trump Administration regarding education access: “The Trump Administration continues to attack access to education for American students. Trump’s FCC Chair is moving to cancel programs that fund Wi-Fi on school buses and hotspots that provide at-home internet. These programs are essential for students in low-income & rural” (September 26, 2025).
Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and has resided there throughout her career. She holds degrees from UCLA and USC, earning her BA in 2000 and JD in 2005.
Her remarks come amid ongoing debates in Congress over government funding deadlines and policy disagreements between parties.
