Nanette D. Barragán, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district since 2017, addressed several topics on her Twitter account this week, including Cinco de Mayo celebrations, the increasing demand at food banks, and criticism of Republican spending proposals.
On May 5, Barragán posted a bilingual message celebrating Mexican American heritage: “¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Today, we celebrate the proud heritage, strength, and contributions of our Mexican American communities who continue to shape our country everyday. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Hoy, celebramos la orgullosa cultura mexicana y la inmensa contribución de las”.
The following day, she highlighted rising costs affecting families and the growing reliance on local food banks in Los Angeles. In her May 6 tweet after speaking with Michael Flood, CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Barragán wrote: “As costs go up, food banks like the @LAFoodBank are serving more families than ever. Spoke with CEO Michael Flood on how families depend on food banks as they try to cover other needs like rent. @HouseDemocrats will continue to fight to fund food assistance for Americans who”.
Later that same day, Barragán criticized Republican budget priorities in another post: “Americans want lower costs for food, health care, and gas. Republicans want to hand Donald Trump $1 billion of YOUR MONEY for his golden ballroom. What a joke. Totally out of touch.”
Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and continues to reside there. She earned her BA from UCLA in 2000 and a JD from USC in 2005. She succeeded Janice Hahn as representative for California’s 44th District.
