Nanette D. Barragán, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district, has recently shared her thoughts on significant issues via social media. Barragán, who succeeded Janice Hahn in 2017 and holds a law degree from the University of Southern California, is known for her active engagement with constituents and advocacy on various matters.
On July 9, 2025, Barragán expressed concerns about the potential financial impact of a legislative measure referred to as the “#BigUglyLaw”. She stated that “Even if you’re not on Medicaid (Medi-Cal in CA) you will pay more for your health care — because the law will raise costs in the health care marketplace, Medicare, and CHIP.” Barragán highlighted that this increase would add to existing struggles with living expenses such as rent and food.
The following day, July 10, 2025, she reported from Wilmington after a tunnel collapse incident. In her tweet she mentioned “Grateful to hear that all of the workers appear to have made it out of the collapsed tunnel.” She extended her gratitude towards first responders for their prompt action at the scene.
Later on July 10, she provided further details regarding the emergency response by stating “Thankfully a tragedy was avoided tonight because @LAFD sprang into action immediately when they got word of workers trapped deep underground when the Clearwater tunnel collapsed in #Wilmington.” She expressed relief that all workers were safe and accounted for thanks to effective rescue efforts.
Nanette Barragán has been serving in Congress since 2017. Born in Los Angeles in 1976 and an alumna of UCLA and USC’s law school, she remains actively involved in addressing issues pertinent to her district.
