Nanette D. Barragán, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district since 2017, criticized former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers in a series of social media posts addressing health care policy and free speech.

On September 21, 2025, Barragán posted: “Trump doesn’t want to negotiate with Dems because he says: ‘They want all this stuff.’ ‘This stuff’ is affordable and accessible health care for millions of Americans. Continuing her criticism the following day, Barragán wrote on September 22, 2025: “Some rural hospitals are now forced to close because Trump and Republicans SLASHED Medicaid funding in their Big Ugly Law. Trump and Republicans aren’t done — they refuse to work with Democrats to make sure your health care premiums don’t go up. @HouseDemocrats are fighting”.

Later that same day, Barragán addressed concerns about freedom of speech, stating: “The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech— NOT just the speech you like. Trump and his administration took @JimmyKimmel off the air because Trump didn’t like what he said. This is a grave threat to the writers, producers, and the entire entertainment industry whose https://t.co/7SB7TCfQEd”.

Barragán has served in Congress since replacing Janice Hahn in 2017. She was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and currently resides there. Barragán graduated from UCLA in 2000 before earning her JD from USC in 2005.
