U.S. Representative Nanette D. Barragán, who has represented California’s 44th district since 2017, posted a series of statements on July 30 and July 31, 2025, expressing concern about the impact of recent Republican-led legislation on Medicaid and its potential effects on her constituents.
In a post dated July 30, Barragán wrote: “Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Law CUTS Medicaid (MediCal in CA) that may force Easterseals to reduce essential staff and services. This would make it harder for many of my constituents, including Freddy, Lupe, and Tyler — to receive the health care services they need.” She reiterated this message in a second post the same day: “Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Law CUTS Medicaid (MediCal in CA) that may force Easterseals to reduce essential staff and services. This would make it harder for many of my constituents, including Freddy, Lupe, and Tyler — to receive the health care services they need.”
On July 31, Barragán highlighted her party’s long-standing commitment to healthcare programs: “Democrats spent 60 years fighting to protect and expand Medicaid and Medicare. While Trump and House Republicans rip health care away from 15 million Americans on the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare— @HouseDemocrats are fighting harder than ever to secure access to”
Barragán’s comments come amid ongoing national debates over federal healthcare policy changes affecting programs such as Medicaid—known as Medi-Cal in California—which provides medical coverage for low-income individuals. The referenced law has raised concerns among advocacy groups about possible reductions in staffing or services at organizations like Easterseals that support people with disabilities.
Nanette Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and continues to reside there. She graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor’s degree in 2000 before earning her Juris Doctor from USC in 2005.
