Nanette D. Barragán, U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district since 2017, has recently used her social media platform to address issues related to veterans, labor protections at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the U.S. census.
On August 7, 2025, Barragán expressed gratitude for military service members in her district by stating: “Our veterans have given and done so much for our country. We showed our appreciation by honoring several of our #CA44 Purple Hearts recipients! Thank you to all our veterans for the sacrifices you made to protect our freedom. @HouseDemocrats will never forget and never stop”.
The following day, August 8, 2025, she criticized a decision by the Trump administration regarding collective bargaining rights at the VA: “The Trump admin’s move to terminate collective bargaining at the VA is a direct attack on the workers who care for our veterans. Gutting these protections will only lead to worse care for veterans and higher costs. I stand with @AFGENational in opposing this outrageous action.”
On August 9, 2025, Barragán commented on former President Donald Trump’s approach toward certain populations in relation to census policy: “Trump will do anything to erase people who he doesn’t like, who don’t agree with him, or who don’t look like him. The census is a mandate to count ALL people in the US. Period.”
Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and continues to reside there. She holds a BA from UCLA (2000) and a JD from USC (2005). Her congressional tenure began after succeeding Janice Hahn in California’s 44th District.
