U.S. Representative Nanette D. Barragán, who has represented California’s 44th district since 2017, addressed a series of political issues in recent social media posts.
On September 19, 2025, Barragán emphasized the importance of safety and civility in politics. She wrote, “There is no room for violence in our country’s politics. No one should feel in danger for expressing their views or beliefs. That’s why I signed onto @RepVeasey and @RepPettersen’s resolution that condemns the violence we have seen recently against elected officials and public”.
The following day, Barragán raised concerns about threats to free speech involving former President Donald Trump and FCC Chair Brendan Carr. In her post dated September 20, 2025, she stated, “Donald Trump and FCC Chair Brendan Carr are threatening the fundamental American right to free speech. @jimmykimmel exercised his 1st Amendment right to state his opinion and was taken off the air because of pressure from Trump and Carr. No one should bend the knee to Trump.”
Later on September 20, Barragán commented on ongoing government funding negotiations. She posted, “Democrats are ready to keep the government open and want to end the health care crisis created by Republicans. It’s time for Trump to come to the table and negotiate before the Trump/Republican shutdown causes even more pain for Americans.”
Barragán has served as a member of Congress since replacing Janice Hahn in 2017. Born in Los Angeles in 1976, she continues to reside there today. Her academic background includes a BA from UCLA earned in 2000 and a JD from USC obtained in 2005.
