Nanette D. Barragán, a U.S. Congresswoman representing California’s 44th district since 2017, recently addressed economic issues, suicide prevention efforts, and immigration enforcement actions in a series of social media posts.
On September 8, 2025, Barragán criticized the employment record and policies of former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, stating: “Trump and Republicans promised they would bring more jobs to our economy— but Americans find it harder than ever to find employment.
Trump and Republicans’ reckless policies and erratic tariffs are skyrocketing unemployment and the cost of living.
The American people deserve”.
Addressing mental health awareness on September 9, 2025, Barragán posted: “Every 11 minutes, a person dies by suicide in the U.S.
Today is #988Day and the start of #NationalSuicidePreventionWeek– and the time for us to learn about the warning signs of suicide and where we can go when we need support.
If you or your loved ones are struggling, 988 https://t.co/4qhz1jKUQS“.
Later that same day, Barragán responded to news regarding immigration enforcement in Los Angeles: “SCOTUS has allowed ICE’s discriminatory raids in LA for the time being. While I am closely monitoring the situation, know that EVERYONE has the right to:
Remain silent
Refuse entry without a valid search warrant
Speak with an attorney
Protect yourself and your loved ones https://t.co/oOnv6bgcJZ“.
Barragán was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and currently resides there. She holds degrees from UCLA (BA) and USC (JD), reflecting her longstanding ties to California’s communities. Since succeeding Janice Hahn in Congress, she has been active on issues affecting her district including economic opportunity, public health initiatives such as suicide prevention hotlines like 988, and civil rights protections during federal immigration operations.
