U.S. Congresswoman Nanette D. Barragán, who represents California’s 44th district, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on health care access.
On October 5, 2025, Barragán commented on the political dynamics behind the shutdown: “Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House — THEY shut down the government.
@HouseDemocrats remain ready to work to reopen the government but House Republicans have to end their vacation first. Democrats want to secure accessible, affordable health care for https://t.co/AV9dwudA4V“.
The following day, she raised concerns about the impact of Medicaid cuts and the government shutdown on community health centers: “Community health centers are at risk of closing because of cuts to Medicaid and the shutdown is only making things worse — if Congress doesn’t pass a funding law, these centers won’t receive their grants, ripping EVEN MORE resources away from clinics like @sjhealthca in my” (October 6, 2025).
Later that same day, Barragán addressed trade policy by criticizing tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s administration: “The Trump tariffs are hurting Americans every day. https://t.co/ueM03jL7Sn” (October 6, 2025).
Barragán has served in Congress since 2017 after replacing Janice Hahn as representative for California’s 44th district. She was born in Los Angeles in 1976 and continues to reside there. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts from UCLA (2000) and a Juris Doctor from USC (2005).
